Each year, car accidents in Michigan are responsible for more than 70,000 injuries and 800 deaths. To better understand car accidents in Michigan and reduce future accident rates, the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, State Police Criminal Justice Information Center and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute come together to document the traffic accidents that occur within the state during the year.

  • In 2011, 834 crashes in Michigan were fatal and 889 people died.
  • 71,796 people were injured in Michigan's 2011 crashes. The total number of crashes causing injuries was 52,487.
  • 230,728 crashes in Michigan caused only property damage in 230,728.
  • Per 100 miles traveled in 2011, 0.94 people died in Michigan traffic accidents.
  • 9,845 Michigan crashes were related to drunk driving in 2011.
  • 274 people died in 253 alcohol-related crashes in Michigan during 2011.
  • 5,377 people were injured in 3,829 crashes in Michigan during 2011.

  • Men are more likely to be the drivers when a crash occurs. In fact, 240,850 crashes involved male drivers in 2011, while only 198,488 involved female drivers.
  • Men are also more likely to be the drivers when a crash causes fatalities. Of fatal crashes in 2011, 859 involved male drivers, while only 351 involved female drivers.
  • Drunk drivers who cause traffic accidents are more likely to be male, with 7,094 males causing accidents in 2011, as opposed to only 2,574 females.

Age Car Accident Statistics for Michigan

  • From 2007 to 2011, only 8 infants under one year old were killed in Michigan car crashes.
  • From 2007, 2011, 27 children aged one to three were killed in car crashes in Michigan.
  • Over the last five years, an average of 12.4 children aged four to ten were killed each year in Michigan traffic accidents.
  • The number of children from 11 to 15 who are killed in Michigan car accidents has decreased from 35 in 2007 to only 14 in 2011.
  • At least 100 individuals aged 16 to 20 are killed in Michigan car crashes every year.
  • From age 21 to 24, the risk of being killed in a car crash decreases slightly with a five-year average of 84.4.

  • 51.7 percent of car crashes in Michigan occurred on clear days in 2011.
  • 26.6 percent of Michigan car crashes took place on cloudy days in 2011.
  • 10.3 percent of accidents in Michigan during 2011 occurred when it was raining.
  • 8.7 percent of accidents in Michigan took place with snow or blowing snow compromising the roadway in 2011.
  • Contrary to popular belief, 52.9 percent of fatal crashes occurred on clear days. This means that more than one out of every two crashes had nothing to do with the weather in 2011.
  • Surprisingly, 60.3 percent of Michigan car crashes in 2011 occurred during the day.
  • 20.4 percent of car crashes occurred in unlit areas at night, while another 12 percent took place in lighted areas during the night.
  • Though more than half of all crashes occurred during the day, less than half (45.8 percent) of fatal crashes happened during daylight hours.
  • 31.8 percent of fatal crashes in 2011 occurred in unlit areas at night, and another 16.7 percent of fatal crashes happened at night in lit areas.
  • The highest proportion of crashes takes place between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. (22.3 percent in 2011).
  • Almost half of all crashes occur between 3 p.m. and midnight.

 

Michigan Car Crashes and Days of the Week

  • The highest percentage of car crashes occurs on Friday, with 16.6 percent of all traffic accidents occurring on that day of the week in 2011.
  • Most fatal crashes occur on Saturday, with Saturday accidents accounting for 20.3 percent of all fatal accidents in 2001.
  • The fewest auto accidents occur on Sunday, with only 10.4 percent of crashes happening on Sundays in 2011.
  • The least fatal crashes happen on Mondays. In 2011, Monday crashes accounted for only 11.3 percent of fatal accidents.

 

Auto Accident Types

  • More than half of all fatal crashes involve only one vehicle (54.9 percent in 2011).
  • Single vehicle crashes account for the highest proportion of all crashes (37.8 percent in 2011).
  • The most common type of multiple vehicle crash is a rear-end collision (23.6 percent in 2011).
  • Rear-end collisions produce the least number of fatalities of all car crashes.

 

Ten-Year Auto Accident Trends

  • Michigan's ten-year total crash rate was highest in 2002 when it hit 395,515. Since then, it has decreased to 284,049, which is 28.2 percent lower than the peak.
  • The total number of motor vehicles involved in Michigan car crashes has decreased over the last ten years. In 2002, 678,990 vehicles were involved in crashes, while the number was only 473,501 in 2011.
  • The number of motor vehicles involved in fatal Michigan traffic accidents has also decreased in the previous decade. In 2002, the number of vehicles involved in fatal crashes was 1,908, while in 2011, the number fell to 1,267.
  • The number of motorcycles involved in accidents in Michigan has increased slightly over the past ten years. In 2002, 3,030 motorcycles were involved in accidents. In 2011, however, 3,175 motorcycles were involved in crashes.
  • Motorcycles have also been involved in more fatal crashes over the last ten years. In 2002, 81 motorcycle crashes led to fatalities, while 113 motorcycle crashes caused fatalities in 2011.
  • Pedestrian involvement in traffic accidents is steadily decreasing over time. In 2002, 2,660 pedestrians were hit by cars, while only 2,399 pedestrian-related accidents occurred in 2011.
  • Pedestrian-related fatal crashes hit 187 in 2002, but this number fell to 152 in 2011.
