If you're in the path of Hurricane Sandy and are not evacuating it's vital for you and your family to have supplies, prepare your home, and have a plan. Below is a list of supplies and preparations to keep you and your family safe during the storm.

To Prepare You, Your Family, and Your Home:

-Clean out gutters to avoid water backup.

-Use hurricane shutters or boards for windows & doors- use 5/8 inch plywood.

-Bring all outside items in before the wind gets them i.e. toys, patio furniture, etc.

-Be sure to get your fridge to the coolest setting in case you lose power. This will hopefully keep your food.

-Fill your tub up with water.

-Make sure to have a full tank of gas in your vehicle(s).

-Have an evacuation plan if necessary i.e., axe in the attic in case of flood.

-Have all important items/documents in waterproof containers such as Social Security cards, passports, birth certificates, etc.

-Unplug all small appliances.

-Download an app on your phone to notify others of your location and if you need help, such as the Red Cross's Hurricane App or their First Aid App.

CNN's Supply List:

-Water:3 day supply, one gallon per person per day

-Food items such as: canned meats, fruits, vegetables, and juice. Peanut butter & jelly, salt-free crackers, protein bars, trail mix

-Can opener

-Flash lights

-Batteries

-Radio

-First aid kit

-Medications

-Vitamins

-Multipurpose tools

-Cell phone and charger

-Sleeping bags

-Cash

-Map

-Pet & baby supplies

-Rain gear & plastic sheeting

-Extra set of keys

-Duct tape

-Activities for children

What to expect in the next 24-28 hours:

-Winds up to 74mph

-Rain 8-12 inches, mostly in the Delaware, Maryland, Virginia & New Jersey area.

-Several feet of snow

-Delayed impact
